Nissan Repair: 92 Nissan Stanza, nissan stanza, jake brakes

Question
QUESTION: I'm having the problem of not having any running lights or dash lights, other forums that I have visited have said bad ground or fuse but I have checked both and no problems yet nothing works.

I'm also having the problem that when braking there is a loud and vibration in the rear passenger side. The rotors are new brake pads are fine all springs are tight.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

ANSWER: Chris,

The headlight switch needs to be replaced.  This is what feeds power to the lights you describe.  I even had a Stanza and I had to replace mine.

The brake issue is most probably a warped drum on the rear passenger side.  Replace the drum and you should be fine.

QUESTION: The lights stopped working when I removed the radio could it have messed with the brightness switch for the dash lights?

and I said rotors but I meant drums they are new yet the noise continues it was described to me as a jackhammer noise I thought it sounds more like Jake brakes on big rigs and fire trucks

ANSWER: Chris,

The instrument lights feed via a blue wire/red stripe.  If that wire was grounded or improperly wired to a power feed it could blow the resistor (dimmer) in the circuit or even damaged the headlight switch.  Get a test light, pull the radio, and check the wire indicated.  I would check the brake drum for true and hard spots in the metal.  Most everything is cast overseas and you never know what you are going to get.  Another thing could be contamination.  Check to see if there is brake fluid or oil contaminating the shoes or the drum.  Brake cleaner and compressed air to get contamination off.

QUESTION: I'M working on changing the head light switch as you have stated but when i pulled the radio there was a red wire with a yellow stripe that I had not connected( there was a wire it corresponded to on the new radio) If i hook up a live wire from the batter then on the left side of the steering wheel a dimmer switch that was the control for the dash lights then has power. No live wire no power to that cluster. Could that possibly be what the problem is along with a bad headlight switch?

Also I took the drums apart sprayed it all down wire brushed it etc. The noise is still there. I thought that maybe the rear wheel cylinder is bad. would that check out to cause the noise problem?

Thank you for all your help

Answer
Chris,

The radio wiring can indeed be a problem since Nissan uses a floating ground.  A wire that seems to be a ground can have power when the ignition is turned on.  Also, I had a Stanza and the headlight switch went out as you describe.  It is noted that the blue wire with a red stripe is the instrument illumination.

If there is no brake fluid leaking and the wheel cylinder is not wet then it would be the drum being work hardened or contaminated brake shoes.
