Nissan Repair: Maxima ABS System, 2004 nissan maxima, wheel sensors

Question
I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima and my ABS and brake light are on. About 3 weeks before those lights came on my brakes were "pumping" or "vibrating" any time I would brake - no matter how lightly. I could also hear the system - it sounded like a robot dying.

I finally took it to the dealer and they quoted me $1800 to replace the entire ABS system saying that some part had burned up and the whole system needed to be replaced. My dad thinks it's probably just one of the wheel sensors. A friend of mine says that I should have the dealer fix the problem since the ABS is a computerized system and no one will be able to guarantee the work like Nissan can.

Is it true that I should only have the dealer fix the problem? Is $1800 a reasonable fee? How can I be sure that the whole system needs to be replaced?

Answer
Hi Tia -

So, you are saying that the brakes are still making the noises you describe?

$1800 does sound high, but then again it depends on what needs replacement. You are certainly not strapped to the dealer, however ensure that you take the car to a reputable mechanic or repair shop. Dealerships are always on the high side.

It is hard for me to evaluate, as I am not sure what you were told is the problem. If you get a written estimate and explain that to me, then I can tell you if it is legitimate or not.

Let me know,
aloha
