Nissan Repair: Engine wont start, nissan cefiro, neutral safety switch

Question
QUESTION: 2001 nissan cefiro with automatic transmission - if the shift lever is in P it won't start and just click once (sometimes it starts)When i turn the key to ON and change the gear to Neutral, it starts. What would be the problem? I noticed that when i turn the key to ON, Sport/Power mode indicator lights on(orange color)Is this normal or something wrong with it? Please help me. Thanks.

ANSWER: Rommel,

The neutral safety switch has failed.  An easy replacement.  On the transmission, front of car, look down at the transmission linkage and you will find the switch.  This needs to be replaced to correct the problem you describe.

I have another question, I hope you don't mind. My Tachometer/RPM needle is not working or does'nt move/stays on zero. Right now, I don't have any idea on my RPM during idle. Please help me to figure out again. Thanks

Answer
Rommel,

If the tach is not working it is usually the instrument itself.  If not the car would not run.  There is a tach lead from the coil packs that feeds the instrument.  But, you will have to diagnose this by removing the cluster and getting a tach to hook up to the connector.  You are going to need a used cluster to diagnose the problem or a tach to connect to the lead at the cluster.  A used cluster runs about $100 bucks and that should verify it was the tach that was defective.  The computer uses the tach lead, at the cluster, to determine engine RPMs.  So, if it was anything other than the cluster the computer would freak and throw a code.
