Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Maxima SE, nissan maxima se, inner tie rod

Question
Hi, I recently bought a 2002 Maxima with 55,000 miles. when inspected, the mechanic indicated that there was slight tie rod bushing.  What is that and how soon should I get it repaired?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suzanne -

The tie rods (you have two on each side of the vehicle) has to do with the steering. There is an outer one and an inner one, the latter being a part of the rack and pinion.

The outer tie rod end has no bushing, is attached to the link that turns the wheels from side to side, and can be replaced with relative ease. The inner tie rod screws into the rack and pinion and has a bushing that could be worn out. Both inner and outer are non serviceable and must be replaced as a unit.

When tie rods fail, there is a lot of play in the steering, and sometimes you hear a loud "clunk" when turning the wheel, or going over bumps. I would replace all of them at the same time, since they are all the same age.

Please tell me what the quote is for the work, and I will let you know if it is in line with normal charges. Too many times, fly by night mechanics take advantage of non suspecting clients with outrageous charges. my goal as a volunteer of allexperts is to prevent that from happening.

Hope this helps -
