Nissan Repair: 2000 Infiniti I30 Timing chain repair, spark plug wire, 2000 infiniti i30

Question
QUESTION: We have an 2000 Infiniti I30 with over 120K miles and we cannot get it to start.  The first time it happened, we took to O'Reilly's and they told us the battery, alternator and starter were fine.  Then it stalled again a few weeks later.  We tried to install a starter and it still won't crank.  Soemone said it may be the timing.

Is this so?  And if so, can you tell me how to change it or tighten the timing chain.

ANSWER: Hi Lorraine -

A few questions -

When you say it does not start, is the engine turning, or when you turn the key nothing happens?

Before condemning the timing chain, I would like you to go through a few tests with me. Get back to me with the answer to the above question, and we can go to the next step -

QUESTION: Initially when we turned the key, nothing happened.  Then we replaced the starter.  Now it will turn over, but it will not start when we turn the key.

I hope you can help.

Answer
Hi Lorraine -

OK, first of all, we need to check to see if there is electrical connection to the plugs:

Pull out a spark plug wire, insert a screwdriver into the boot until it wedges against the terminal inside. Hold the driver shaft about 1/4" away from any metal surface while someone cranks the engine (do not touch any metal surface while doing this). There should be a spark jumping between the metal surfaces.

If no spark, check the ignition module, cap and rotor in the distributor (if the rotor is not turning, then it is the timing chain). If there is a spark and the engine still does not start, check the fuel system (most likely the pump in the tank)

Hope this helps -
