Nissan Repair: 2001 quest instruments dancing, pencil eraser, nissan vehicles

Question
2001 quest has an intermittent problem - all the analog gauges (speed, tach,
fuel, temp..) move between the highest and lowest value.  The indicator lights
will also flash.  This seems almost like they're displaying some code.. it seems
very coordinated.   It will self correct to show correct values after 1,2... some
random number of minutes.  Where can I find out more info on this?

Answer
Mike,

Sounds like the power feed to the cluster in intermittent.  I would remove the cluster and clean the connector and contacts with a number 2 pencil eraser by lightly brushing the metal contacts.  Blow off the eraser dust and reinstall it.  If this does not correct the problem you could use tuner cleaner (Radio Shack) and lightly spray both connector and harness end and dry off and reinstall.  The harness and cluster on some Nissan vehicles get loose...  When power is lost the cluster goes to zero and when it powers up it goes into the initial self test and until the connection gets warm, one or two minutes, and then it works normal.  I have even had to splay the contacts to get them to connect tighter on some.  I think the venor that made the harness screwed up. Anyway, I am sure this is the problem...
