Nissan Repair: figuring out my car, nissan 300zx, fog light

Question
I actually have a few questions. I just bought my 1987
Nissan 300ZX this past Friday. Well i discovered that I
didn't have a fuse box cover to tell me the guide. I need
to know how to get one. My second question might have
something to do with the first. I got a headlight and a fog
light out, both on the right. Would that be a fuse or just
a light bulb? My third question is: I just put in a radio
it was straight wired to my battery, although the radio
remained off, my battery drained. So my friend had an
alternative maybe not a very smart one but, it was wiring
it to the fuse now it seems to work. I was wanting to know
how i can go about doing this in a better way if doing it
how i have it now is bad.

Answer
Ginger,

If the headlight and fog light are good, you can take them out and try them on the other side, then the headlight switch needs replacement.  There are seperate contacts for left and right headlights and they are also the switch that lets the fog light come on.  The fog lights will not come on when the high beams are on.  So, when the headlight is not working on that side it causes the foglight not to function either.  An owners manual will provide the fuse location as would the cover.  You are looking at a wrecking yard, ebay or the like (on-line) to find a cover.  The radio needs to be wired correctly since Nissan uses a floating ground.  A wire behind the radio appears to be a ground until the key is turned on and then it turns into a powered circuit.  If the radio is working now and the battery is not running down you might just leave it alone.  But, if you change out the radio, in the future, get a harness adapter and solder the wires to connect things properly.
