Nissan Repair: 91 240sx instrument panel no display, turn signal switch, seat belts

Question
QUESTION: 91' 240sx instrument panel has no display. Has illumination. battery indicator is on but is always on.
Seat belts don't work.
All instruments are analog (needle)
Clock on panel is blank.

Happened when driving  and the Alt Fusable Link 75a blew.
Have since replaced Alt (was dead), and fusable link 75a.

Meter Fuse popping on start.
Also Room light popping on contact.
Both 10a.

I read somewhere about the link switch (switch link or whatever its called) in the engine compartment and to check if the meter fuse pops with it out. It does not.

However there is still no change of instruments with the meter fuse not popping.

Also... no blinkers for turn signals are working.
Related maybe?

I really just want to know where to focus my attention.
I'm about to check behind the instrument panel tonight.

Any help would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Will,

Check the wiring under the driver's seat for melting to the floor.  The converter is under the car there and if it has overheated it will melt the wires and short them to the floor pan and take all sorts of things with them.  There is a circuit breaker under the dash that will reset once the short is gone.  Also, check the output of the alternator to see if you are exceeding the cars voltage requrements.  Next, make sure the turn signal switch is not shorted internally.  I would check things in this order.  Email me back with what you find.  Autozone or Checker will perform a free electrical inspection on your running car in their parking lot, your car running...

QUESTION: I didn't see any melted wires under the seat. Alternator is within limits for voltage.  engine Cont is ok and not blown and the alt relay after being replaced when it happened has not blown. Haven't checked the swich on the turn signal yet.  Also wanted to mention the A/C does not function power on.

The Room lamp still blows the fuse on contact and the meter still blows on startup.

I still haven't checked with Autozone.

I'm still confused as to what it might be.

Answer
Will,

You have a dead short.  I would remove the cluster and replace the fuse and see if it blows again.  But, the common denominator would be the headlight switch.  I would say replace it and the meter and lights should work properly.  The airconditioner compressor clutch and fan relay could be defective since you say it does not come on.
