Nissan Repair: Shiftless Nissan Govenor Cap, nissan sentra, transmission shop

Question
I have a 1994 Nissan Sentra, car feels like it is stuck in 1st (automatic transmission).  Researching the issue it seems like a stripped governor gear.  I was wondering if you have any hints for getting the governor cap off the transmission.  Should I just pry it off or is there a better way to go about it.  Thanks

Answer
Michael,

It is a press fit and can be popped off.  Now, are you sure it is not stuck in second gear?  Nissan has a really cool program on their transmission shift computer that keeps the transmission locked in second gear to keep from damaging the transmission when a problem is detected.  I would first get a transmission shop to read the transmission codes as a diagnosis prior to taking anything a part.  This could be as simple as the shift computer itself or a servo on the valve body.  Check it out and email me back with what you find.
