Nissan Repair: 96 p terrano free wheeling hub, auto locking hubs, clunk

Question
hi, when i drive my terrano in four wheel drive its fine, when its put back into 2wd the n/s hub makes a whizzing noise then when you slow down to nearly a stop theres a clunk and it stops and then does it intermittently. i have removed the free wheeling hub a the moment until problem is solved.

Answer
The condition is due to the auto locking hubs sticking.  If you disassemble and clean and lubricate per the manual they should be fine.  If they have ever been under water, as in four wheeling, they need to be cleaned and lubricated.  The noise is just them sticking and finally releasing.  You are doing the right thing not having them connected.  Now, you could just reassemble and not put it in four wheel drive until you get the chance to disassemble, clean and lubricate.
