Nissan Repair: Valve cover gasket repair., valve cover gasket, shallow sockets

Question
I'm in desperate need of some help. I had an 'issue' with my wonderful little 1996 Nissan Altima GXE automatice yesterday. Long story short, through teh power of deduction and tinkering about under my hood, my father and I have deduced i need a new Valve Cover Gasket. An exhaustive search on google lead me here. My question is, how do we replace it? What parts do we need? what should we do? What should we NOT do? Or should we simply take in to the shop?

Answer
Hi Jane -

I am curious to know what the procees was that prompted you to condemn the VC gasket. Oil leak?

Anyway, Most of the time the challenge is the access. Once you get to it, the job is much easier. Sometimes you have to remove several items. I did not get the engine size from you, so it is hard for me to direct you accurately.

the other thing is the tools you eill need. If you do not have tools like a flex head ratchet, deep and shallow sockets (I think the hold down screws are 10MM), scraper, aside from a basic tool set, then it might be more practical to take it in.

If you want to send me a photo of the engine, I can better explain.

Hope thie helps -
