Nissan Repair: 89 Nissan Maxima Transmission, nissan maxima, 5th gear

Question
I have an 89' Nissan Maxima with a manual transmission, but every time I shift
in to 5th gear, it tries to shift back in to 4th unless I hold it in 5th by force.
Do I have to replace the entire transmission? How do I go about doing this?
Thanks!

Answer
Samuel,

The fifth gear balking ring, syncro and gear need to be replaced.  I would drop the transmission out and get a good shop to change the parts indicated.  Also, while you have it out replace the bearings where the CV driveshafts enter the transmission as well as the seals.  You will basically have a new transmission.  Replace the clutch while you are at it and you will be ahead of the game.
