Nissan Repair: 96 Nissan Maxima GLE, oxygen sensors, nissan maxima

Question
I have the exact same question as the person who posted in Dec. 08 about their 96 Nissan Maxima failing smog over and over. We have taken it to a few different places and also had our Japanese-car mechanic check it out. My husband says they tell him it is "running lean" and again no check engine lights are on. All seems normal. Car only has 82K with hardly any problems in the past.

Answer
Kendra,

Without the SMOG readout I do not know the exact issue.  Running lean could be that the injectors are plugging up.  It is over ten years old.  If it were me I would perform a complete tuneup.  Plugs, fuel filter and air filter.  Also, I would have the oxygen sensors checked.  Since yours is a 1996 they use the OBDII Port in your car.  This means your car is doing the test and not their machine.  If you replace the oxygen sensors along with the normal tuneup you should pass.  Also, I would fill up with premium gas and drive bthe vehicle on the highway before I went in for a SMOG test.  Email me back if I can provide further assistance.
