Nissan Repair: No fuel while cranking., oil pressure switch, 1991 nissan stanza

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1991 Nissan Stanza that will crank but not start. I have good fuel pressure and correct fuel volume coming from the fuel filter (while cranking the engine). Then when I do the same test after the Fuel Pressure Regulator, I get fuel with the key on but it stops completely while cranking the engine. When I stop cranking the engine, fuel will come out of the line momentarily then stop. The Fuel Pump Relay and Pressure Regulator have both been replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Tedd,

Replace the oil pressure switch and see if it corrects the problem. Nissan uses the pressure switch for safety.  The switch is used to make sure the engine is running when the fuel pump is on.

QUESTION: Von, I replaced the oil pressure switch (it was located right above the oil filter). The car still does not start. I removed the fuel line coming from the fuel pressure regulator and I now have a small trickle of fuel, before I had nothing (at times the car almost starts). Again, when I first turn the key on I have fuel but it stops when I start to crank the engine. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Tedd,

You are probably looking at a fuel pump.  First, check the power going to the fuel pump and see if you get 12 volts at start and slightly less when in run mode.  If you have power the pump is defective.  If not, you need to backprobe to the relay and find the voltage drop.  I have had vehicles that the harness was corroded and even one where the top of the tank was covered in dirt and rust where the fuel pump harness connects.
