I am assuming you are speaking of the head gasket - which will probably run you about $1,000. Perhaps a little more if you need valves done, or the head resurfaced.

To verify that it is the gasket, first of all, is the engine running rough? White smoke that dissipates quickly from the exhaust is another indicator.

If you have these symptoms, have a compression test done on the vehicle. Get the numbers and let me know, then I can tell you what to do next. Depending on the labor time, a compression test should be about $70.
