Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 4X4 burning rubber smell and smoke coming out back, pathfinder 4x4, nissan pathfinder

I noticed the last couple times I started my Pathfinder it was a bit sluggish turning over, now I smell a very bad rubber like burning smell and lots of white smoke coming out the back end.  Any suggestions?

Can you please answer the following and get back to me?

1. Does the smoke that come out of the exhaust just linger in the air, or does it dissipate quickly?

2. Does it come out only when the engine is cold, or all the time?

3. Does the engine run rough? Miss at high speeds?

4. Has a compression test been performed?
