Motorcycle Repair: 1997 Kawasaki Vulcan Classic 1500, kawasaki vulcan classic, compression check

Question
I went for a short ride yesterday and I checked the oil before I left, The bike started running rough when I stopped to check it out oil was dripping out of the right side breather cover, when I took it off the oil just poured out of there, I put more oil in it and drove it about 3 miles to a friends house, any idea what might have caused this and is this a major fix ?

Thanks for your help,
Lewis

Answer
Lewis,

-this generally means your engine is worn and the
oily piston blowby gases are being expelled through your
engine breather into the air filter box.

-Depending on how bad it is you may be able to
route the breather hose out of the air box
and just stick a filter on the end of it
down low on the bike somewhere.

-You may want to do a compression check
to see if both cylinders are near equal.

-Also check that it isn't fuel leaking from a sticky
carb float inlet needle.
