Question
Service Engine Soon light came on.  Went to AutoZone and the code read "lean fuel". My son goes to UTI, brought my car in and he, other students and the Nissan instructor tested the O2 sensors.  They tested o.k.  They ran a couple of other test and it was stated it could be I need a new catylic converter.  Brought it in for an inspection sticker.  It passed all test except OBD engine running bulb check.  My son asked what that meant at inspection station and they told him he could go online and find that info.  Hours later....HELP!!

Answer
Denise,

You cannot pass the SMOG test with a check engine light on. If it were me, I would first get a tank of high test gas and a bottle of Lucas fuel treatment.  Then, reset the check engine light.  You will have to drive the car three times from turning the car off to going and getting on the highway and returning, driving for fifteen minutes.  Do this three times from turning the car off to the drive and return until you have completed the process.  Now, the check engine light should be off and you can pass SMOG.  The computer is smart in new cars, from 1996 on up, they know if you reset the light and just drive in to get it a SMOG test.  So, you have to do the fifteen minute drive thing three times.  Then, that part of the computer code will clear internally.
