Do not do it there.  Get into the relay box under the dash and pull the fuel pump relay.  Now, read the side and allpy power to the one leg and the pump will run.

Answer
Nick,

I have not personally looked under your dash since but if it is like any Nissan's we have in the United States it should be the third from the left.  Now, over here, the relay is under the dash and you would be looking from left to right; above the fuse panel.  They are on the same plane as the fuse panel, but just above.  The Vanette is not sold in the United States.  Basically, the wiring you describe is the black is the ground and one wire is the fuel sending unit and the other is the pump.  The following link is to a great Nissan parts store, on-line in the UK.  I would suggest a Haynes Manual for the wiring diagram for your specific vehicle.  But, basically, what you would do is power the relay with either switched ignition.  You can bridge a wire to the relay that is only powered when the ignition is on or wire in a switch.  That would also act as a theft deterrent since no one would know that the switch had to be flipped to get the pump to work...
