Nissan Repair: 2002 nissan frontier, nissan frontier, vacuum booster

Question
The brakes on my 2002 nissan frontier are extremely sensitive.  I barely touch the brake pedal and the truck lunges forward and starts stopping very suddenly.  Is this normal? what can be done to correct this to make it more driver friendly?

Answer
Hyrum,

Sounds like the rod that the brake pedal actuates is too long.  There is a rod that is attached to the brake arm.  This pushes on the back of the vacuum booster.  If this rod is too long the brakes will be really sensitive.  The end of the rod, the part you cannot see, has a threaded end on it.  This end needs to be screwed in a little.  I would do a quarter of a turn and drive it and adjust it to your preference.  It is very sensitive so small amounts of adjustment each time.  It is a pain to get the rod out since you have to detach it from the brake pedal and drop the clevis pin to remove it.  Remember that you are daling with the brakes here and if something is messed up on install it could be unsafe.  So, if not familiar get someone that knows about brakes.
