Answer
Ron,

If you are failing smog with your 78 you might look at the basics.  Probably too much NOX in the exhaust.  I would first do a leakdown test on the injectors and see if they are leaking after you shut the engine off.  Too much fuel will screw things up.  Also, if the emission parts are defective you could check with courtesynissan.com or rockauto.com on-line.  Otherwise you are looking at sourcing them from wrecking yards.  Now, be sure you have fresh oil and that the distributor is not contaminated with oil on the optics or it will screw up the timing and injector pulse width.  If there is oil contamination replace with a rebuilt unit.  Make sure the fuel filter is changed as well and a K&N air filter will make the engine run leaner since the engine does not have to suck air through a paper filter.  Kind of a way to cheat in leaning out the engine.
