Nissan Repair: Brake lights stay on, 2003 nissan altima, brake light switch

Question
Hi there -

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima and the brake lights do not shut off.

I have replaced the rubber stop that rests against the brake switch button, checked the brake switch itself. Even when I disconnect the brake switch the light still remains on. My friend said it could be the cruise control switch. I disconnected that too, and still the lights remain on.

Any ideas to help me??

Thanks for your support -

Answer
Calvin,

If the brake light switch has been tested and disconnected and the rear lights stay on you will need to check to see if it is the brake lights that are staying on.  The master switch, the one with the headlights on it have contacts that could have shorted together.  I would have someone step on the brake pedal and look at the tail lights.  If they get brighter then you need to replace the headlight switch.  Email me back and let me know what you find before you purchase a new headlight switch.
