QUESTION: what is the procedure for this operation i.e. do i take the strut off, do i take the entire shaft off or just the cv joint?

Answer
Marlon,

I take the wheel off and the tie rod end and the caliper and then rotate the spindle to one side and unbolt the large bolt on the outside as well as the bolt circle on the shaft bearing under the car. This way you do not have to align the car after you are done.  If the strut is unbolted at the spindle the car will need an alignment too.  Get a Haynes Manual for really good photographs and instructions.
