Nissan Repair: Speedometer, digital speedometer, speedometer cable

Question
QUESTION: Speedometer and mileage indicator suddenly failed while driving my Nissan
Primera estate registration N (1995?). Could this be the 'Meter' fuse? Other
gauges eg. engine speed  were not affected. If not a fuse what could be the
problem?

Many thanks,   Martin

Answer
Hi Martin -

I would check the speedometer cable. It might have disengaged or snapped. Locate the cable to transmission connection. You can find this by following the speedometer cable from in the vehicle (behind the instrument panel). Remove the cable by unscrewing it. Inspect the plastic gear drive in the housing, and connections. Look for broken teeth, binding. Try to pull the cable out of the housing. If you can't do it, then the cable should be OK If it moves, then it is snapped and must be replaced. Also try to turn it to see if it turns easily in the housing.

Please get back to tme after these tests.
