Nissan Repair: 93 altima stalls at random and wont start back up, power resistor, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: hi. i have a 93 altima with around 220,000 miles on it and it likes to shut off at random moments after running for about 10 minutes. the engines just cuts off. it still has power to everything it just plain shuts off. and it will not start back up. i have to wait 10 or 20 minutes or so and maybe it will start. sometimes it has to sit for a few days. other times i go to start it in the morning and it just wont start. i am getting proper voltages all the way from the battery to the spark plugs. i have tried changing distributor, cap and rotor, power resistor, and the coil. we tested the power transistor and it tested good. there also seems to be something draining the battery over night. not totally dead though. it still has enough juice to crank it over. everything we have changed leads back to the same problem. we are getting fuel. we can hear the pump kick on and start to smell gas if we try cranking it over for to long. there are no codes coming up that we know of. the engine light bulb is fine but when the car does start the light does not turn on or flash. we are at a loss and are about to junk the car. we are trying to avoid this because despite the mileage it is still a great car and runs like a champ. any info at all will help us greatly. thanx in advanced!

ANSWER: Donny,

Check the ECM to make sure it is grounding properly for the injectors to work.  If the fuel injectors are leaking that would flood the car and it would not work.  Pull all the plugs and see if any are overly wet and black.  If they are change the injectors.

QUESTION: well i checked the ground and plugs and everything seems fine there. any other suggestions or ideas?

ANSWER: Donny,

Check the fuel pressure and see if you are getting pressure when the car dies.  If it does replace the fuel pump relay.

QUESTION: the fuel pressure seems fine. i dont know what this problem is

Answer
Donny,

Check the distributor for the presense of oil on the optical shutter wheel.  Remove the cap, rotor, rotor post and cover.  Under all of this is the LED pickup and receiver as well as the shutter wheel.  If there is oil on the shutter wheel or optics means the distributor shaft seal is leaking.  Replace the unit with a rebuilt one.
