Nissan Repair: Starter Replacement 1997 Nissan Altima, nissan altima, negative cable

Question
How difficult is replacing the starter on my 1997 Nissan Altima?  I'm handy with tools, so if there's no special requirements, I'd probably try do it.

Answer
Hi Jim -

The starter is relatively easy to replace. You will need a 3/8" socket set, ratchet (flex head the best), and extensions. Sometimes a an open end wrench set would be beneficial. The most common sizes you will be using is 12, 14, and sometimes 17MM.

Anyway, first, disconnect the battery negative cable. Then remove the starter. There are 2 or 3 mounting bolts and a couple of electrical connections that need to be removed. Once done the starter should just come out. Installation is reverse of removal.

Hope this helps -
