Nissan Repair: 1997 Maxima noise from under cup holder, exhaust clamp, rubber mallet

Question
I hear a clanging noise when going over bumps or on rough patches at highway speeds that sounds like it's coming from under the cup holder in the center console right behind the auto transmission shift lever.  Sounds like something has come loose.  Emergency brake seems OK though.  How do I remove the center console to look?  Any idea what I might find?  The car seems to be driving just fine otherwise.

Answer
Hi David -

Are you sure it is coming from inside the car? Sounds like an exhaust clamp or bracket came loose. From what you describe, it is rught at the area you mention, only underneath the car. Best way to check it is to get a rubber mallet and hit the exhaust system. You will hear any loose metal immediately.

Try this before taking apart your console.

Hope this helps -
