Nissan Repair: Speed Sensor on a 96 nissan pickup code p0500, nissan pickup, mecanic

Question
My check engine comes on and sometime it goes off for a while...I took my truck for inspection and came out with code p0500..I took my truck to a mecanic and they check the
speed sensor..they remove the sensor from the transmission
the sensor is in good condition according to the mecanic..

But the light still on ..now the speedometer works fine , but the odometer works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't move
for a while and them starts working...is it true that there
is another sensor inside the transmission that connects to the speed sensor and could be bad? or I need to check the Odormeter? is there a sensor in the Odormeter? don't know what to do?...Thank you very much!!

Answer
Hi Ernest -

There is no sensor for the odometer except for one that monitors maintenance due mileage, which illuminates the check engine light. Being that the speedometer works and odometer is marginal, I would check the odometer itself. Both speedometer and odometer is run by a cable, so it is unlikely that the cable is defective.

As for the check engine light, try to reset it by disconnecting the battery, or better yet, remove the ECM fuse for about a minute. Plug it back in and then drive normally. This will reboot the system and erase the codes. If the code comes back, then it might be worth checking. Most codes are a result of a minor sensor malfunction, and a lot of times are nuisance codes.

Hope this helps -
