Nissan Repair: Fuel Problem, nissan pickup, foot on the gas

Question
Hi Calvin,

I've got a 1993 Nissan pickup, 4x4, 4cyl engine. I've noticed for quite some time that it has a tendency to run too fast after I start it, kind of like the choke is sticking. It has been this way for several months. Just a couple of days ago when I started it though, it instead started running real slow, then died when I put my foot on the gas. I drove it 1.5 miles and it died about five times in that stretch. It wouldn't idle and would die if I didn't keep my foot on the gas pedal and kind of feather the gas.

When I put it into gear and start letting out the clutch, I have to feather it very gently or it sputters and dies.

Any ideas? Fuel trouble, maybe carb?

Thank you for any ideas on diagnostics, it's greatly appreciated.

Dan

Answer
Hi Dan -

the causes are many - first, let's ask the obvious -

When was the last tune up?
A lot of times, carbon tracking on the dist cap and rotor causes this condition, as well as spark plugs ready to go. Also, check for damaged ignition wires, remove each one from the dist tower and plug side to inspect. Does black smoke come out of the exhaust?

While the plugs are out, inspect the plugs. If they are black with carbon, the engine is running rich, and you have a fuel issue. Carb, perhaps.

Please get back to me -
