Nissan Repair: chatter noise from engine, nissan sentra spec v, interference engine

Question
My son overheated his engine on a 2002 Nissan sentra spec v 2 or 3 month`s ago and now a loud chatter noise has developed around the engine. Was wondering what could be the cause, especially since it didn`t happen right away? Could a loose timing belt make a similar noise and does the car have an interference engine?Hope I made sense, mechanics isn`t my forte.

Answer
Hi Erik -

I believe it is an interference engine, however, if the timing belt was not broken, then it should be fine. How long was the car running overheated? What was the cause? Is the car running rough now? The answers will help with diagnosis.

Also, was the oil level checked? Chatter noise could be a collapsed lifter, or just low on oil.

Please get back to me with answers, then we go to the next step -

Thanks
