Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Frontier Starter Issue, nissan frontier, safety switch

Question
Hi.  I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier 4x2 with a 2.4L four popper.  I've been having a starter issue for a while now.  The truck sat unused for about 4 months during which time the battery went dead.  I checked and charged it and the alarm system (aftermarket) went haywire and I'm unable to completely disable it as I had before.  It seems to be staying unarmed now, but the starter issues happened at the same time.  I turn the key and nothing happens.  I hit the key a few more times or hold it down and eventually the starter will engage.  I initially thought it was the clutch safety switch, so I jumped it out with no positive results.  I then thought maybe the solenoid was going bad, so I replaced the starter, again with no positive results.  Question:  Is it possible that the alarm system is failing to communicate the ignition sequence to the solenoid or possibly a bad connection through the alarm system?  Or would a sticky relay be more likely?

Answer
Dave,

The problem is most probably with the alarm and how it disables the starter.  Alarm/stereo shops normally install the starter kill feature by cutting the line to the starter and putting the relay between the ends cut.  If the alarm is active the starter will not get power.  This is usually accomplished under the dash, driver's side, close to where that clutch interlock switch is.  Look for that wire and follow it back into the harness and you should see where they did the splice.  Bridge that and the truck should start.
