Nissan Repair: 1988 Nissan Sunny B12 SGX 1.5 liter model, cylinder head gasket, valve cover gasket

Question
Mechanic refilled transmission oil when he noticed transmission a little dry. Cylinder head was  refaced while oil seal, valve cover gasket, and cylinder head gasket was replaced. Before that engine was losing power, leaking oil, emitting white smoke and overheating. Now there is excessive loud noise coming from my 1988 Nissan Sunny B12 car. Noise is reduced when I shift into gear. No more leaks and white smoke but it still overheats. Main radiator fan and auxiliary cooling fan works fine.

Answer
Hi Roel -

I can think of a couple things right off the bat -

Have you checked or replaced the thermostat? Also, when you say it still overheats, does that mean it boils over after long drives. just driving in stop and go, or after running for a few minutes?

Excessive noise could be from the exhaust manifold bolts not tightened correctly, or a leaking or misplaced exhaust manifold gasket when they worked on the cylinder head. Also check the exhaust runs as they may have loosened that as well.

Please get back to me about these questions, so I can help you with the next step.
