Nissan Repair: expensive brakes?, precision tune autocare, disc brake service

Question
Hi, I emailed you earlier about a problem with my 98 maxima,  I doubt there's a lot you can tell me on that, i'm going to go somewhere and have them hook it up to a sensor I guess. I have another question.

I'm wondering if I got ripped off when I replaced some brakes a month or two ago.

I went to a precision tune autocare, and this is what I ended up with.

standard oil change- $16.90
disc brake service- $79.90
rear calipers(2)- $459.96
rear rotors(2)- 107.14
add rear disc brake-$39.00
bleed and flush brake syst-$39.90

all for a grand total of 809.70.
this seems like an obscene amount to pay to replace two rear brakes.  labor came out to 241.50, but the rest was all parts I guess.  Any thoughts?  The guy told me that the parts for the maxima were particularly hard to come by or something.

thanks,

mike

Answer
Mike,

For about $65 bucks you can purchase a scanner and do your own code reading and it will clear the codes to boot.  That way you know what is wrong and you will not be at the mercy of a shop.  The brake parts cost is within reason as it the labor.  Back brakes are more for parts since the parking brake is integrated in the calipers.  A good thing to do to keep from having to do it again is to bleed the brakes every two years with Ford high Performance Brake Fluid.  I say this because the Ford fluid has a higher boiling point and is DOT 3 so it will not screw up your system.  Never use synthetic brake fluid in a Nissan or any car with ABS.
