Nissan Repair: 2003 xterra belts, center bolt, proper tension

Question
how do i change the belts on 2003 xterra v6 with super charger thank you ed

Answer
Hi Ed -

Without looking at your vehicle, it is hard to tell. But, the process is basically the same. First, determine if you have 3 or 4 belt, or one serpentine belt (a serpentine belt is one belt that runs every component - A/C, steering, alternator, and damper).

If you have a serpentine belt, find the idler pulley and loosen the center bolt. This should free up the belt enought for removal - caution: ensure that you remember how the belt came off, because you have to do the same thing putting it back. There should be a diagram on a sticker under your hgood, or in the engine compartment that tells you how to install the belt.

If your vehicle has several smaller belts, you will have to change them one by one. Loosen the alternator bolts, top and bottom to free up that belt, and the power steering - same way. The A/C belt is probably tightened by another idler pulley, so loosen that one too. Remove all belts, again noting how it is put in, becuase you will be installing the same way. When installing, strt with the innermost belt first, and work your way out.

Proper tension is important. Too tight will cause damage to the components, and too loose will cause squealing. Proper tension is when you can move the belt easily with no more (or less) than 1/2" play.

Hope this helps -
