Nissan Repair: torn axel boot, cv driveshaft, split type

Question
i have a 1999 maxima se. the left side axel boot is split. is easier to replace the whole axel or to change the boot. also is the tranmission a limited slip. i have a manuel 5 speed.

Answer
Robert,

Either way the CV driveshaft has to come off.  A good shop will do the work from $100 to $165 per side.  And, taht includes removal, rebuild and reinstall.  Also, after you do the work you will need an alignment.  If you can do the removal and install yourself you could save a few bucks.  But, to install a new boot that is not a leaky split type it requires that the CV driveshaft has to come off the car and it be taken a apart to get the new boot on.  Do the passenger side at the same time so you will not have to get the car re aligned as that boot is going to fail soon after.  My 2000 Maxima had the same problem and I did one side at a time to save money and all I did was end up having to align the front end a second time when the passenger side boot failed a couple of weeks later.
