Nissan Repair: Nissan cruise control switch, static electricity, steering wheel

Question
Hi.  I have an 03 Altima 2.5L.  The cruise set button on the steering wheel broke off.  Looks like I need to replace the entire switch.  How difficult is it to take the steering wheel apart in order to do this?  Is there a risk of damaging the airbag?  If not, can you provide some instruction?  Thank you.

Answer
Scott,

Unless you have the tools and have experience taking airbags a part I would let the dealership do it.  I say this because the possibility of airbag deployment.  Now, if you follow the instructions and disconnect the battery first.  The remove the airbag fuse and wait five minutes.  Then, take the knee bolster off under the dash and find the yellow harness to the airbag and disconnect it.  Now, you need an anti-tamper torx socket to remove the airbag assembly from the steering wheel.  Once you pull off the little covers on both sides of the steering sheel you will see the bolts.  Remove these and then, holding the airbag front away from you remove the airbag and set it on a flat surface padded side up and away from anyone or anything that it can deploy on.  No static electricity please.  Once you have done this the cruise control switch is pretty easy to replace.  Just unscrew the back and fish the harness through and replace it.  Assembly is reverse of removal.
