Nissan Repair: wont start, nissan d21, neutral safety switch

Question
I have a 1986 Nissan d21 and can't get it to start.New starter and starter relay. Can jump across starter relay and it will start, but won't start by the key.

Answer
John,

The neutral safety switch is probably gone out.  Since it is a 1986 it is probably due.  If a automatic the safety switch is on the transmission where the shift linkage connects.  If a manual the switch is under the dash above the clutch pedal.  Wire around to verify and then replace when you have proof.
