Nissan Repair: Transmission removal on 1986 Nissan Pickup to replace clutch, nissan 720 pickup, anchor bolts

Question
Hello Von,  I read your answer to the clutch replacement question on the Nissan pickup with much interest, as I have discovered the same problem of clearance to remove the transmission on my 1986 Nissan 720 pickup, 2-wheel drive, five speed.

I realize now that I will have to remove the torsion bars in order to remove the transmission but have questions regarding this---

1.  The truck is up on jack stands with the front wheels hanging free.  How can I remove the remaining tension on the torsion bars before removing the adjusting nuts from the torsion bar anchor bolts?  Will I have to drop the lower link?

2.  I plan on measuring  and recording the length the anchor bolts are sticking past the adjusting nuts on the torsion bar anchors, and then reajusting the adjusting nuts so "stickout" length is the same on the anchor bolts when replacing the torsion bars.  Will this method work to return the torsion bars to the same tension?

3.  Do I need to note the position of the anchor arms before removing them?

Thanking you in advance for any information you can provide me so I can replace the clutch on my truck.

Sincerely,

John

Answer
John,

Load the lower control arm and disconnect the anti-sway bar and the shock and let the jack down and all the tension should come off the torsion bar.  Your method of marking the location is find.  I like to use torque paint on the locking assembly to maintain a reference.  But, it is up to you and your method should work fine.
