Nissan Repair: 1996 maxima electrical, 30 amp fuse, negative battery cable

Question
QUESTION: had battery replaced recently. car antitheft started going off every time my wife opened door and the car wouldnt start. I found negative battery cable very loose. so i tried to bypass the security system by grounding the lt/grn-blk with silver dot wire under dash. didnt work. so I took off the antitheft relay and hardwired pins 3 to 4 to supply starter with power. and took out the antitheft fuse.  about the same time as all this, a 30 amp fuse kept blowing, that controls windows, door locks, power seats etc. i found a shorted wire under drivers seat,(repaired, seats, windows now working) brand new battery checked bad so got it replaced.  New battery is not being charged. showing 12.5 volts with car running.  No warning indicator lights on after startup.
took off negative cable battery to check battery drain with car off. from negative post of battery to cable picked up .8amps sometimes to over 1amp. pulled bcm fuse under hood and amperage went to .01.  Your opinion appreciated. bcm? or possibly something I did?

ANSWER: Scott,

Sounds like the body control module is blown.  But, you can correct the charging system with a little work.  First, you will need to see if the alternator is blown from all the trouble the alarm was giving.  I would get the battery charged up and go to Checker or Autozone for a free inspection of the charging system.  If the alternator checks bad then it is just a matter of replacement.  If not, then you will need to check the power feed wire to it.  If there is no signal when you have the car running you will need to back trace the wire and see where it is defective.  My thoughts run to the fuse terminal at the positive battery terminal.  Hope this helps and email me back if you need more.

QUESTION: had alternator checked today. showed 12.6 volts. I forgot to mention that right before car runs battery down, as it is sputtering, the airbag light comes on and flickers. dont know if that means anything different. thanks

Answer
Scott,

The alternator is not putting out since the 12.6 is the battery voltage.  You should have around 14 volts at the alternator when it is working.  Either the wire feeding the signal to the alternator or the alternator fuse is gone.  Or, if both are good then the alternator is defective and in need of replacement.
