Nissan Repair: 2000 Nissan Altima GLE wont start, nissan altima gle, nissan altima

Question
Hi I have a 2000 Nissan Altima GLE with 110,600 miles on it.  It won't start this morning, no cranking at all.  All radio, light, and clock are working.   I did notice there are lot of corrosion dust on the positive of the battery.  I cleaned it up and change a battery terminator.  It started.  However it won't start again this afternoon.  No cranking just a sizzling sound.  A friend told me to try to secure the parking position of the gear lever (although it was on parking position).  I tried and it did work. However this car is not like this before.

What does this sound like to you?  Thanks!

By the way, 2000 Nissan altima has a timing chain or a belt? What kind of noise should I notice as a sign to replace it?

Answer
The timing belt usually does not give an indication that its about to give way. That many miles, you should have it replaced.
The starting problem might be 1 of 3 things.
1. The positive battery cable going to the starter.
2. The neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission may have loosened up or is bad.
3. The starter is going out.
