Nissan Repair: 1997 NISSAN ALTIMA. WONT STAY STARTED, fuel pressure gauge, nissan altima

Question
QUESTION: ABOUT 2 DAYS AGO MY CAR RAN OUT OF GAS AND I REFILLED THE TANK AND TRIED TO START IT . IT WILL STAY STARTED FOR ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS AND THEN IT DIES . WHAT CAN BE WRONG WITH MY CAR ?  SOME PEOPLE SAID IT WAS THE  FUEL FILTER , FUEL PUMP AND / OR  FUEL INJECTOR  COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT WRONG WITH IT ?  PLEASE WRITE BACK

ANSWER: Kenneth,

Could be that the fuel pump is going out and loosing pressure.  I would check the fuel pressure as this is a strong possibility that the pump is going out.  You could get lucky and have fuel pressure and just have a defective filter.  But, to check the fuel pressure should be checked to confirm the problem.  Get a Haynes Manual to give you the procedure to check the pressure and you can get a fuel pressure gauge from the parts store on a loaner basis.  So, you would only be out $20 bucks for the book.  Email me back with what you find.

QUESTION: SO HOW WOULD I REPAIR THESE PROBLEM ? CAN YOU TELLS ME THE STEPS. PLEASE ?

Answer
Kenneth,

First get the book and the fuel pressure gauge.  Then open the hood and on the fuel rail there is a schrader valve like the ones on the tires.  Screw the gauge in and start the car.  If the pressure drops off when the car dies then you know it is the fuel pump.  If not you are looking at something else.  Did you fill the tank?  If there is not enough gas the system could be sucking air.  But, if you have pressure you are going to need to get the car scanned to see if there are any error codes.  Autozone or Checker can scan the car for free.
