Question
i have a 1990 nissan 300zx non-turbo automatic. my trans isnt shifting properly. it will not shift from first to second. if i keep giving it gas the rpms just go up and it just stays in first. but if i let off the gas completely and let the rpms go down it will shift up to second and i can resume driving. no other gears have any problem just first to second. i checked my fluid and replaced the filter but no luck. any ideas on what the problem could be? thanks

Answer
Chase,

Sounds like the governor is sticking.  You changed the fluid and filter so we have eliminated dirty fluid.  I would go to a transmission shop like Cottman and have them check it out.  You might get lucky and they will remove the governor or you might have a first to second solenoid going out.  Lastly, it might require the removal of the transmission for a rebuild as debris could be plugging the valve body preventing it from shifting properly.
