Nissan Repair: 2002 Altima engine noise, oil sludge, 5w30

Question
When Engine is cold it is very noisy. Even when Temp. outdoors is 50 degrees the engine sounds very clanky on acceleration for 3 or 4 miles. The engine sounds fine when warm. It is the 4 cyl. version and the oil level is correct.

Answer
Joe,

Change the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30 and see if that solves the problem.  Otherwise, the chain tensioner is plugged up.  Since the vehicle is so new the possiblity of a defective oil pump is pretty much not an issue.  Problems with the engine is that the oil galleries are so tight any oil sludge buildup will clog the feed gallery to the tensioner and that will allow noise since things are loose.
