Nissan Repair: Nissan headlights, phillips screwdriver, nissan maxima

Question
Hello, I have a 92 Nissan Maxima GXE. The car keeps blowing headlights on the left side. I am getting ready to purchase my 4th Halogen headlight in 2 years. Last 3 times it was just the low beam. This time high and low popped. I could audibly hear it blow. Why does it keep doing this and what do I do to stop it.           Diana

Answer
Diana,

The headlight switch circuit is probably drawing too much load.  You see, the headlight switch has the contacts that turn on the circuit for both highbeam and lowbeam.  The contacts get old and corrode and resistance builds up and that gets the circuit hot.  Then, the headlights blow as a result.  Well, that has been my experience.  You can get a switch from rockauto.com for under $100 bucks and all it takes is a phillips screwdriver to install it.  The steeringwheel does not have to come off.  Just remove the column cover and you will see the screws that hold the switch on.  Basically, remove the old one and install the new one.  Then, put the cover back on...
