Nissan Repair: Maxima Tranny, vacuum line, vacuum hose

Question
Helping my neighbor with his car.  94 maxima v6 single overhead cam? (red
valvecovers).  Transmission works ok in reverse but will not do anything in
any forward gear.  Found a vaccuum hose coming from top of transmission
and going nowhere.  It's about 10 inches long and at the end has a horseshoe
pipe that makes a u-turn but is not connected to anything.  I can't find
anything that looks like it should connect to.  Could this be the problem?
Where should it connect?
Thanks man... your the best!!!

Answer
Hi Randal,

Sorry, your neighbor's car will need to have the transmission rebuilt. The forward clutch or even the forward planet set is out. The "vacuum" hose you refer to is the vent. It does not hook up with anything. I tend to believe this transmission is experiencing a catastrophic failure of magnitude. Look to spend about $2500 to $3000 to repair this fully electronic transmission correctly.

Hi Randal,

In the old days, there was a vacuum line that if disconnected, would not let the car shift automatically. You would have had to drive it like a stick, starting out in low then up shift. Sorry there isn't a quick fix for this one though! Happy Holidays.
