Nissan Repair: Pathfinder Transmission, 4x4 vehicles, shifting gears

Question
I have a 1998 Pathfinder SE 5-speed 4x4 with 100k miles.
When shifting gears at low rpm's I get a chatter in the transmission (or some where) until the rps get up. If I run it up to 3000 or so rmp's to shift it dosn't make the noise.  Just when the engine is lugging.  It almost sounds like a deisel when it's doing it, and happens in all gears except 1st.  Some one said something about gear lash? What ever that is, and I have noticed the sound in other 4x4 vehicles.  Is this a problem or the nature of a 4x4.  Can it be quieted down any way?

Thank you for your help
Richard

Answer
Hi Richard,

There is nothing from Nissan on this. I was hoping to find a TSB for a common problem that would help us out. I can't think of anything either I have experienced either. I would have you take it to a Cottman transmission and have them do their diagnostic service. If you don't have one near you an Aamco will do it for free also. Cottman's are generally less expensive on their repair work as a rule.
