Nissan Repair: ford taurus, taurus 3, ford taurus

Question
I know this is not a nissan question, but I don't know who else to ask.... I have a 90 taurus, 3.0 liter.. and latley, it has been taking longer to start, sometimes, i will have to turn the key on and off 3 times, before I can get the car to start,, when it's running for the first 15 minutes, I can hear the fuel pump making a buzzing sound, but eventually it will go away, I think the car has 227,000 miles on it but I'm not sure, when I turn the car off , and if it sits only a few minutes, it usually starts right up the first time, also if it is the fuel pump, I'm not sure of the tank size in this car, they say a 16 gal or a 18.6 gal tank, I don't have the owners manual for this car.. any help on this would be appreciated... thanks,,, Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,

I do Lincoln/Mercury also so ask away anytime. The engine is completely computer controlled. Did you happen to notice a check engine light on when it's running? The buzz you hear could mean the fuel pump is about to crash. I think it's probably a sensor though. Have you done any tune-up stuff to it yet? 227K on any car will take it's toll for sure. As far as tank size, if you give the Ford parts guy the VIN number he can tell you or run it down to empty and see how much it takes to fill it. They design fuel tanks to still have 2 or 3 gallons in there when the gauge reads empty to cool the fuel pump. Let me know what you've done so far and about the light.
