Nissan Repair: Rough Idle while Stopped, air control valve, nissan maxima

Question
Thanks for taking my question.

I am driving a 95 Nissan Maxima, with almost 145k.  The problem I'm having is when my car comes to a stop.  With the car in drive and the break depressed at a stop light or stop sign, the engine starts to idle rough.  The rpms jump between 600 and 800 the entire time I'm stopped.  If I put the car in neutral, the car idles fine.  The rough idle does not occur until the engine is at operating temperature - it takes about 5 minutes of driving before the problem occurs.  I've also noticed that if I've been driving the car for 15 minutes or longer, the problem stops.  This has been happening for about a 2 weeks.

I've had the spark plugs and fuel filter changed about 4 months ago.  The thermostat has also been changed recently.  I took it to a mechanic last week, they reset my computer and that seemed to help for 2 days, but now the problem is back.  I'm wondering if it is a sensor that doesn't acknowlege when my car gets to opperating temperature and keeps working as if it is a cold engine.  Just a guess.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer
Andrew,

I would say the throttle body needs to be cleaned.  Or, the idle air control valve needs to be cleaned.  The car runs fine when cold since it needs more air and runs rich.  Once it warms up it hunts for an idle until things get moving.  The idle air control valve is what controls the idle of the car.  If it is clogged up or the connection is dirty it will do as you say.  Check these first and give me an email back with what you find.
