Nissan Repair: Removing a strip spark plug, metal shavings, aluminum paste

Question
do you have any input on the best way to remove a striped plug on a 1995 Pathfinder it's the second plug from the front.

Thanks

Answer
Wiz,

If the sparkplug is in deed striped you are going to have to remove the head to correct the problem.  The metal shavings will get into the cylinder otherwise.  Now, you can get a sparkplug thread repair kit from Helicoil.  Checkout a good parts store and get a head gasket set and the thread restore kit and it will be a long weekend.  The nice part is that you do not have to remove the other head.  Just remove the intake and exhaust for the head in question.  I know this is not what you want to hear but it is the correct way to do it.  I know that there are those that would risk getting metal shavings in the cylinder by doing the thread cutting with grease on the tap and then inserting the Helicoil.  Your choice...  Email me back if you have further questions.  I have found that if you remove the plugs when the engine is stone cold, like overnight, it reduces the risk of pulling the threads out with the plug.  So, if you say it is striped due to it being stuck you could spray WD40 or another lubricant in the hole and let it sit a while and then remove it.  But, have the engine cold and when you install new plugs use a anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the new plugs.  The stuff looks like aluminum paste and it makes it really easy to remove the plugs when it is time to change them again.
