I was told at a local repair shop that I have a bad clutch in my ac compressor.  Van makes a terrible noise when you start it, and is even worse when the AC runs.  Air works ok except for the noise.  Without replacing the compressor, can an ac clutch be repaired?

Yes, you can replace the clutch only.  I would replace the clutch if it makes noise when the airconditioning is on and off.  If it only made the noise when it was on then the compressor would be bad too.  But, from what you say it is just the clutch.
